Helping Our Members Evangelize
The mission of HOME is to assist all churches and pastors in carrying out the Great Commission of Jesus Christ and in spreading Biblical holiness to all people.
Some of our churches are struggling, lacking the energy and personnel to reach out, evangelize, and bring about growth. The Conference has decided to implement a program to assist churches that have the desire to grow, but lack the resources to accomplish their desire. This program is called HOME: Helping Our Members Evangelize. This program requires the close cooperation between the church receiving help and the team selected to provide help.
What will the Conference/HOME team provide?
The Conference/HOME team will provide transportation for the team; help team members raise support as short-term home missionaries; provide literature to promote The Southern Methodist Church, the local church’s outreach, and the Biblical plan of salvation (denominational pamphlet, tracts, flyers, etc.); plan the program for outreach, including training in evangelism, an approach to canvassing the neighborhood, and a program, including the speaker and music, for evangelistic services. The leadership will also address supervision issues and provide adequate leadership. A team captain will be appointed, who will work with the local church pastor and leaders, to give direction and coordination. In the areas affected by the outreach program, the team captain, in consultation with local leaders, will have the final authority to make decisions concerning the team goals, the team members, the outreach program, and provisions for the team.
What will an interested, struggling church need to provide?
First, the church must meet certain criteria. It must be located where there is an opportunity for growth to occur. It must also exhibit a willingness to grow and an enthusiasm for working with an outside team to bring new growth. It must be willing to provide a structure and leadership to consolidate potential growth and move forward after the team leaves.
Second, the church must be willing to provide housing (in members’ homes) or work with team leaders to acquire housing for the team. Should this provision cause a significant hindrance to hosting a team, the team members will seek to raise adequate support to provide for the costs of housing. The church must be willing to provide meals or to assist in the provision of meals for the team. The church should provide a street map of the area, a list of possible contacts, and any pertinent information about the community that would help the team leaders plan for an effective outreach campaign. Any church that desires the assistance of a HOME team should contact the vice-president of the conference.
How will HOME teams be recruited?
Information will be provided in the Southern Methodist magazine announcing the need for home missionary teams, the requirements for team members, and an application form for interested parties to make application for serving as home missionaries. Information will also be sent to all pastors and board chairmen in the denomination requesting their assistance in locating interested persons to serve as home missionaries. A concerted effort will be made in our own Conference to recruit members for these teams.
What are the requirements for HOME team members?
A desire to meet and connect with new contacts
A desire to share the gospel and make a positive impact on contacts
A desire to learn how to share the gospel and a willingness to be trained in evangelism
